MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN YOUR COMMUNITY

Currently, there are more than 130,000 students in Illinois schools that are not proficient in English. Unfortunately, many of these students are falling behind because the demand for “highly qualified” bilingual and ESL teachers outweighs the supply.

The Bilingual Transition to Teaching Project recruits qualified and passionate individuals that want to change career paths and become bilingual teachers.

Update June 2009

Thank you for visiting the BTTT Program website.  As of September 2008, we finalized and enrolled our last cohort for this five-year grant.  At this time we will not be offering any future cohorts and we no longer are accepting applications for the BTTT Program.

You should check with your area colleges and community colleges for education programs or Alternative Certification programs.

If you are bilingual, we suggest the following steps to become a bilingual teacher:

  • Take and pass the Target Language Proficiency test in the language for which you are proficient. If you are credentialed in another country, you will need to take the same test in English.
  • Take and pass the Basic Skills Test.
  • The scores for these tests are good for 10 years. Inquire with a district in which you are interested in teaching. If they have a need, let them know you have passed the TLP and see if they would be interested in hiring you.
  • Once you know of a position, apply for the Type 29 Bilingual certificate. This is good for 6 years during which you are required to be enrolled in an accredited education program of study working towards a standard certificate (Elementary Type 03 or High School Type 09).
